LUXEMBOURG, May 30, 2010 -- Skype today announced the launch of the new version of its iPhone application. Available to download from the Apple App Store today, this update allows iPhone users to make and receive Skype-to-Skype calls, and to call mobiles and landlines around the world at very low rates for the first time over their 3G data connection.

Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G will be free for a trial period which will run until the end of 2010*. Details of pricing will be announced in the coming months and will be in line with Skype's commitment to providing customers with great value. Skype-to-Skype calls over WiFi will still remain free.

“Using Skype on 3G has been the number one request among our iPhone customers.
Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Declined 6 Per Cent, Smartphones Grew 27 Per Cent in Second Quarter 2009, Gartner Reports

Inventory Destocking Continues with 13.9 Million Units Shed by the Channel

Egham, UK, August 12, 2009 -- Worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 286.1 million units in the second quarter of 2009, a 6.1 per cent decrease from the second quarter of 2008, according to Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT). Smartphone sales surpassed 40 million units, a 27 per cent increase from the same period last year, representing the fastest-growing segment of the mobile-devices market (see Table 2).

"Despite the challenging market, some devices sold well as consumers who would usually have purchased standard midrange devices either cut back to less expensive handsets or moved up the range to get more features for their money," said Carolina Milanesi, research director at Gartner. "Touchscreen and qwerty devices remained a major driver for replacement sales and benefited manufacturers with strong, touch-focused midtier devices. However, the decline in average selling price (ASP) accelerated in the first half of the year and particularly affected manufacturers that focus on midtier and low-end devices, where margins are already slim." » read more »

comScore Releases First Data on iPhone Users in the United Kingdom

93 Per Cent of U.K. iPhone Users Accessed Mobile Media in January

London, U.K., March 26, 2009 -- comScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today unveiled for the first time its data describing iPhone users in the United Kingdom, finding that 93 per cent of iPhone owners accessed mobile media in January. According to comScore, mobile e-mail is used by 75 per cent of British iPhone owners, making it the most popular type of mobile content consumed on the device.

“Consumers are clearly embracing the iPhone’s touch screen keyboard,” observed Alistair Hill, analyst, comScore. “The penetration of e-mail usage on the iPhone is more than double that of the smartphone category as a whole. Over the past several quarters, the UK smartphone market has been dominated by the N95, which lacks a QWERTY keyboard. As a result, we see smartphone users favour using their device for music and photo messaging, two activities for which these Nokia devices are particularly well-suited, more than e-mail.” » read more »
