The GSM Association (GSMA) has today published the first in a series of ‘Technical Guidelines’ white papers on mobile NFC (Near Field Communication) services, providing the consolidated views of mobile operators as input to support the standardization of NFC technology. More than twenty mobile operators, including many of the largest in the world, have been working together in the GSMA’s initiative to develop a common vision for Mobile NFC services. The initiative aims to support the development of a stable and efficient NFC ecosystem and promote interoperability, leading to standardization on a global scale.

They are: Bouygues Telecom; China Mobile; AT&T (formerly Cingular Wireless); Elisa; KPN; KTF; Mobilkom Austria; NTT DoCoMo Inc.; Orange; Rogers Wireless; SFR; SKTelecom; Telefónica; Telenor; TeliaSonera; Telecom Italia; TMN; Turkcell; Vodafone and ‘3’. » read more »

Momentum builds around GSMA’s pay-buy mobile project

Nokia joins leading operators and handset makers in global initiative to enable mobile phones to be used in retail outlets to pay for goods and services

Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone maker, and a further 10 mobile operators have thrown their weight behind a GSM Association initiative to enable the worldwide use of mobile phones for payments at retail outlets.

KPN, Maxis Communications Bhd, mobilkom austria, O2, Orange, SFR, SingTel, SKT, Vodafone and Wind have joined the 14 mobile operators* that initiated the project in February. The handset vendors in the programme include Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which both plan to participate in the first trials scheduled to begin in October.

The GSMA’s 'Pay-Buy Mobile' initiative seeks to define a common global approach to using Near Field Communications (NFC) technology to link mobile devices with payment and contactless systems. Together with a SIM/Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) card in a mobile handset, NFC can be used to enable a wide range of secure, interoperable and transparent services, such as credit and debit payments. » read more »

GSMA's CEO, President Musharraf And Prime Minister Aziz Discuss How To Connect The Next 50 Million Mobile Users In Pakistan

Rob Conway, Chief Executive Officer of the GSMA, met in Islamabad recently with President Pervez Musharraf to strengthen cooperation between the government and the mobile industry in getting the next 50 million users in Pakistan connected to mobile. On Saturday, the GSMA CEO met with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, along with CEO's from Ufone (Mubashir Naqvi), Mobilink (Zouhair Khaliq), Paktel (Guo Yonghong), Telenor Pakistan (Tore Johnsen), and Warid (Hamid Farooq), as well as the Minister of Telecommunications & IT, Awais Leghari, and Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA), Shahzada Malik.

In his meetings with the President and the Prime Minister, Mr. Conway suggested that eliminating the 500 Rupees activation tax paid by consumers and the industry would increase mobile penetration and lead to an increase in total tax revenues for the government. The elimination of this tax could significantly increase mobile usage and fuel economic growth, according to a study by consultancy Deloitte on behalf of the GSMA. » read more »

Spectrum Key To The Development Of Mobile TV In Europe

EMBC report highlights opportunities and hurdles facing mobile television

15th March 2007 - Brussels: Mobile network operators in Europe called for more spectrum to be made available for the provision of mobile television, echoing one of the findings in the final report of the European Mobile Broadcasting Council (EMBC), an initiative of the European Commission. While the EMBC report highlights the great variety of technical solutions to the provision of mobile broadcast services, such as 3G network-based video streaming, MBMS and DVB-H, DMB and satellite broadcast solutions, it notes that a lack of spectrum could limit the development of some of the new mobile TV platforms available. » read more »
