China’s Ministry of Railways Chooses Nortel Mobile Network to Enable High-Speed Railway to Run Smoother

GSM-R Wireless Staff Communication and Signaling Optimize Train Performance

January 29, 2008 -- BEIJING – China's Ministry of Railways (MOR) has gained powerful communications and train management capabilities for its busy system after selecting GSM-R mobile communications railway technology from Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT]. The highly secure wireless network provides new communications capabilities between trains and ground staff along the 510 km high-speed passenger line between Zhengzhou and Xi'an.

With fast trains traveling at speeds of up to 350 km/hr, conventional mobile networks are not reliable enough to depend on for critical communications. Purpose-built for such applications, the Nortel GSM-R solution enables drivers, dispatchers, shunting team members, train engineers, station controllers and other railway employees to reach each other anywhere along the line, even at full speed. Features such as group calls, connections based on the train's position, prioritization of calls during emergencies, and connection to employees by function rather than name all ensure the rapid response necessary for safe and efficient train operation. » read more »

Ericsson Wins Multivendor Spare Parts Management Service Contract with Telefónica Mexico

August 29, 2007 -- Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) will provide a comprehensive spare parts management service for the GSM network of Telefónica Mexico. Ericsson will manage multivendor spare-parts supply and logistics for radio access, transmission and core network.

The multi-year contract also includes ecology management for the disposal of hardware units, as well as logistics, deliveries and service performance reporting to help increase the operator's efficiency. These services components will be applied to Ericsson equipment as well as third-party product vendors of transmission and power. This will reduce the complexity in Telefonica's multivendor support environment, as Ericsson will act as single interface towards other vendors.

Telefonica will benefit from cost reduction in logistics and management as well as improved spare parts handling procedures. This will enable Telefonica to focus more on its core business of delivering innovative solutions to their customers.

The deal builds upon Ericsson's longstanding relationship with Telefónica and leverages its local presence in Mexico. » read more »

Remaining TDMA/Analogue subscribers urged to make the free switch and enjoy Canada's most advanced and reliable network

Rogers Wireless has announced that nearly 200,000 former TDMA/analogue customers have already made the switch to GSM in advance of the May 31, 2007 turndown.

On January 10, 2007, Rogers announced that it would be turning down its older TDMA and analogue networks effective May 31, 2007 and move the remaining customers on these older networks onto its advanced GSM network.

PARAMARIBO, SURINAME – Monday, April 16, 2007: Digicel, the fastest-growing mobile telecommunications operator in the Caribbean and new entrant to the Latin American market, today announced that it has been awarded a license to operate a GSM network in Suriname, extending Digicel’s seamless international mobile network and competitive offerings to 23 markets.

The new license comes as a result of the liberalization process of the telecommunication market in Suriname, which started four years ago by the Government of Suriname with the drafting of the New Telecommunication Provisions Act. This Act comes into effect on April 16, 2007. With a population of close to 500,000 Suriname’s mobile penetration is estimated at just over 40%.

His Excellency Drs. M.S.H. Hassankhan, Suriname’s Minister of Transport, Communications and Tourism, welcomed Digicel to Suriname stating, “We are entering an exciting new era in telecommunications in Suriname bringing more advanced services at more competitive prices and allowing more people than ever before to access mobile technology. » read more »

Momentum builds around GSMA’s pay-buy mobile project

Nokia joins leading operators and handset makers in global initiative to enable mobile phones to be used in retail outlets to pay for goods and services

Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone maker, and a further 10 mobile operators have thrown their weight behind a GSM Association initiative to enable the worldwide use of mobile phones for payments at retail outlets.

KPN, Maxis Communications Bhd, mobilkom austria, O2, Orange, SFR, SingTel, SKT, Vodafone and Wind have joined the 14 mobile operators* that initiated the project in February. The handset vendors in the programme include Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which both plan to participate in the first trials scheduled to begin in October.

The GSMA’s 'Pay-Buy Mobile' initiative seeks to define a common global approach to using Near Field Communications (NFC) technology to link mobile devices with payment and contactless systems. Together with a SIM/Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) card in a mobile handset, NFC can be used to enable a wide range of secure, interoperable and transparent services, such as credit and debit payments. » read more »

ESPOO, Finland, April 13/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today rejected Qualcomm's public statements that it does not use Nokia patents. Nokia has for the last fifteen years contributed its technology to industry standards, such as GSM, WCDMA and CDMA. If Qualcomm's products comply with industry standards it is in the same position as any other supplier of mobile technology in that it needs access to Nokia's patents covering standardized technologies.

Nokia believes that Qualcomm is currently using over one hundred of Nokia's GSM/WCDMA and CDMA2000 essential patents in its chipsets. Nokia and Qualcomm are yet to agree on the compensation payable by Qualcomm for such patents. With its more than 200 million units annually, Qualcomm is the largest user in the world of Nokia's technology and patents. Nokia's request for royalty payments from Qualcomm is based on royalty levels which are fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND).

Since the early 1990's Nokia has invested over $35 billion in R&D and built one of the wireless industry's strongest and broadest IPR portfolios with over 11,000 patent families. » read more »

Cellular One Puts Its Network on "Fast Track"

Wireless Provider Aggressively Expanding Service Nationwide

Cellular One from Dobson Cellular Systems – an independent provider of wireless service to rural America – today said its “2007 Network Fast Track” plan will expand its coverage for thousands of the customers it serves.

Under the strategic plan developed and implemented by Cellular One’s Network Quality Assurance Team, by end of the second quarter the company will turn on 75% of its new cell sites that it will build this year.

“Fast Track gives us the ability to hit the ground running in 2007,” said Timothy J. Duffy, Chief Technical Officer and Senior Vice President. “We will add as many new cell sites in six months as we would have added in nine months. The result is better coverage, fewer dropped calls, increased capacity and an overall enhanced wireless experience sooner for our customers.”

Cellular One, which operates GSM/GPRS/EDGE voice and data networks in 17 states, plans to build approximately 300 new cell sites this year, he said. » read more »

Tele2 Signs Agreement With TDC On Access To The Swedish Mobile Network

Tele2 has signed an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) agreement with TDC. This means that, as an MVNO lessee, the Danish operator has gained access to Tele2's GSM and 3G networks in Sweden. It is expected that the agreement will come into effect early in 2008 and have a validity term of five years.

- Competition is good both for consumers and for the growth and development of the industry we work in. Our agreement with TDC means that Swedish users of mobile telephony services are now offered a new alternative to choose from and that Tele2 will make increased profits on their current assets, says Niclas Palmstierna, CEO of Tele2 Sweden.

In the past, Tele2 has granted leases for its Swedish mobile network to Spring Mobil, Ventelo and Telenor and it is looking forward to opening up its network to more operators.

According to the Strategy Analytics GaAs service report on 3GSM 2007, suppliers of power amplifiers, front-end modules and transceivers emphasized their strong product mixes to provision custom solutions at handset OEMs -- including cost-effective solutions for emerging regional markets and leading-edge products to meet the challenges of W-CDMA and beyond. Details on these products are can be found in "3GSM 2007 Show Report: Power Amplifiers, Front-end Modules and Transceivers."

GPRS handsets will continue to make up a significant portion of the cellular handset market, especially in emerging regional markets, while the momentum behind 3G/3.5G, and its successors, emphasizes requirements for multi-mode and multi-band architectures. GaAs device manufacturers demonstrated products at both ends of the spectrum. » read more »

Digicel Launches CDMA Roaming in the Caribbean

With Leading Pan-Caribbean Operator Becomes First in Region to Offer GSM and CDMA Roaming Capability

Digicel announced that through its partnership with Huawei Technologies, it has launched CDMA roaming in the Caribbean and Bermuda, making it the first GSM operator in the region to simultaneously offer GSM and CDMA on its mobile network.

Huawei has been awarded a CDMA2000 1x EV-DO contract and as a result CDMA travelers coming to the region will now be able to roam on Digicel's network and experience the same high level of roaming service that GSM roamers have come to expect from Digicel. In its initial stage, CDMA roaming is being introduced to five of Digicel's 22 markets, including Jamaica, Bermuda, Aruba, Cayman Islands and Barbados.

"When traveling to the Caribbean, many U.S. mobile customers experience poor service and erratic network coverage from CDMA Caribbean operators," said Mario Assaad, Digicel Group CTO. "Now, they can come to the Caribbean and have reliable mobile service by roaming on our seamless mobile network." » read more »

HSCSD

HSCSD (high-speed circuit switched data)

GSM enhancement enabling data rates of 28 kbps and higher through the combination of multiple time slots. (Cingular)

With High-Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) you can transmit data at speeds of up to 43.2 kbps which means that data transmissions such as emails, faxes, or downloading files just became easier and faster. (Nokia)

A circuit-linked technology for higher transmission speeds-up to 57 kilobits per second, primarily in GSM systems. (Ericsson)

High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HSCSD), is an enhancement to Circuit Switched Data, the original data transmission mechanism of the GSM mobile phone system. As with CSD, channel allocation is done in circuit switched mode. The difference comes from the ability to use different coding methods and/or multiple time slots to increase data throughput. » read more »
