CAMBRIDGE, January 23, 2008 - ip.access, the award-winning market leader in femtocell and picocell technologies, today announced that Cisco® has made an investment in the company. Terms of the investment were not disclosed.
Already cash-positive with its existing 2G picocell business, ip.access has secured funding from an impressive array of industry supporters for its breakthrough Oyster 3GTM femtocell, which is currently in trials with major mobile network operators globally. Existing ip.access investors include Scottish Equity Partners, Rothschild Gestion, Intel Capital, Amadeus Capital Partners, ADC and Motorola Ventures.
Ubiquisys Ltd, the developer of intelligent femto access points for the residential market, and Kineto Wireless, Inc., the key innovator and leading supplier of UMA technology, today announced the successful completion of interoperability testing between the Ubiquisys ZoneGate 3G femtocell and Kineto’s UMA network controller.
This testing represents an important milestone toward enabling mass-market deployment of femtocells. The testing also demonstrated several key advantages of using UMA, a commercially proven 3GPP standard, as the core network integration approach for femtocells. These advantages include enabling mobile operators to leverage their existing core networks through standard interfaces to support femtocell deployments, as well as enabling seamless access to all existing core network services using standard 3G handsets.
NEC Corporation (NEC), a leading provider of 3G infrastructure and handsets, internet, broadband network and enterprise business solutions and Kineto Wireless, Inc., the key innovator and leading supplier of UMA technology, today announced that NEC will integrate Kineto’s UMA Network Controller (UNC) into NEC’s Home Gateway Solution.
Femtocells are small cellular base stations designed for use in residential environments that allow a user with an existing mobile phone to access cellular voice and data services over IP. Femtocells allow mobile operators to extend the reach of their 3G services to within subscriber homes by leveraging the user’s broadband connection. In addition to addressing coverage holes, femtocells give operators an opportunity to potentially shape end-user behavior by encouraging the use of 3G data services in the home femtocell where they can be faster and cheaper.
