Ericsson New WCDMA/HSPA Network Supplier for Elisa in Finland

August 13, 2007, 13:00 (CET) -- Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) has been chosen by Finnish operator Elisa to deliver WCDMA/HSPA network equipment, taking the longstanding relationship between the two companies to a new level. The expansion will virtually double the coverage and capacity of Elisa's existing WCDMA/HSPA network.

Under the contract, Ericsson will more than double the number of radio base stations in the Elisa network over the coming year. By the end of the year, more than 120 towns and cities will have 3G coverage, strengthening Elisa's position as a leading Finnish 3G/HSPA network operator and service provider. Elisa chose Ericsson for the expansion project following a successful pilot that concluded earlier this year.

Ericsson's High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) solution provides increased data speeds by introducing enhancements in the uplink and the downlink. The advanced technology boosts network capacity and cuts response times for interactive services, increasing the performance of mobile broadband.

The contract also covers support services, deployment, integration and educational services. » read more »

UMA Technology Advances Mass Market Femtocell Deployments

Ubiquisys Ltd, the developer of intelligent femto access points for the residential market, and Kineto Wireless, Inc., the key innovator and leading supplier of UMA technology, today announced the successful completion of interoperability testing between the Ubiquisys ZoneGate 3G femtocell and Kineto’s UMA network controller.

This testing represents an important milestone toward enabling mass-market deployment of femtocells. The testing also demonstrated several key advantages of using UMA, a commercially proven 3GPP standard, as the core network integration approach for femtocells. These advantages include enabling mobile operators to leverage their existing core networks through standard interfaces to support femtocell deployments, as well as enabling seamless access to all existing core network services using standard 3G handsets. » read more »

Tele2 Signs Agreement With TDC On Access To The Swedish Mobile Network

Tele2 has signed an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) agreement with TDC. This means that, as an MVNO lessee, the Danish operator has gained access to Tele2's GSM and 3G networks in Sweden. It is expected that the agreement will come into effect early in 2008 and have a validity term of five years.

- Competition is good both for consumers and for the growth and development of the industry we work in. Our agreement with TDC means that Swedish users of mobile telephony services are now offered a new alternative to choose from and that Tele2 will make increased profits on their current assets, says Niclas Palmstierna, CEO of Tele2 Sweden.

In the past, Tele2 has granted leases for its Swedish mobile network to Spring Mobil, Ventelo and Telenor and it is looking forward to opening up its network to more operators.

Source: Tele2

NEC And Kineto Partner On Femtocell Market

NEC Integrates Kineto’s UMA Network Controller (UNC) into Home Gateway Solution

NEC Corporation (NEC), a leading provider of 3G infrastructure and handsets, internet, broadband network and enterprise business solutions and Kineto Wireless, Inc., the key innovator and leading supplier of UMA technology, today announced that NEC will integrate Kineto’s UMA Network Controller (UNC) into NEC’s Home Gateway Solution.

Femtocells are small cellular base stations designed for use in residential environments that allow a user with an existing mobile phone to access cellular voice and data services over IP. Femtocells allow mobile operators to extend the reach of their 3G services to within subscriber homes by leveraging the user’s broadband connection. In addition to addressing coverage holes, femtocells give operators an opportunity to potentially shape end-user behavior by encouraging the use of 3G data services in the home femtocell where they can be faster and cheaper. » read more »

KTF begins HSDPA services nationwide from March 1

1 March 1896 marked the arrival of the magneto telephone in Korea. After 110 years, the era of voice-only communications has come to an end with the start of video communication, as marked by the Revolution in Communications Day. KTF will create a new story as a top telecommunications entity, as it leads the video-communications era.

KTF CEO Young-chu Cho (www.ktf.com) held a press conference on the 28th to announce the launch of KTF’s HSDPA service – a world first – reaching 99% of the population.

Construction and Building a Nationwide HSDPA Network

The KTF construction of HSDPA lines across the country involved 1 year and 5 months of concentrated work in building the lines themselves and also in quality improvement. Through these efforts, KTF was able to improve on existing CDMA standards and ensure the same quality anywhere in Korea with the uniform network possible with HSDPA. » read more »

Wireless Call Quality Problems Continue to Decline as the Transition to 3G Networks Takes Hold

Verizon Wireless Ranks Highest in Five of the Six Regions in Call Quality Performance

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 15 March 2007 –As the number of reported wireless problems reaches historically low levels, the overall rate of customers experiencing a wireless call quality problem has declined for a third consecutive reporting wave, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Wireless Call Quality Performance StudySM –Volume 1 released today.

Now in its fifth year, the study currently measures wireless call quality semi-annually. Call quality is based on seven customer-reported problem areas that impact overall carrier performance: dropped/disconnected calls; static/interference; failed connection on the first try; voice distortion; echoes; no immediate voice mail notification; and no immediate text message notification. Problems are measured by the number experienced per 100 calls (PP100), with a lower PP100 score reflecting fewer total problems experienced. » read more »

Start: 03/15/2007 - 00:57

Timezone: Etc/GMT

Venue: New Delhi, India

Profile: The CDG is comprised of CDMA service providers and manufacturers, application developers and content providers. By working together, the members help to ensure interoperability among systems, while expediting the availability of 3G CDMA technology to consumers.

The current rate of CDMA subscriber adds in India averages 1.8 Million subs a month and this should take the CDMA Subscribers past the 50 Million mark in April 2007. CDG is celebrating this achievement and welcomes the same as it happens in April. CDMA was first deployed widely in India in 2003 & in three years, the subscriber base has crossed 46 Million, giving CDMA a 30% market share of the total mobility market place. This, after having conceded a lead of 8 years to the competing Technology, GSM which started in 1995 in India. In fact with the launch of CDMA services by Reliance & Tatas in 2003, tariffs dropped by 45% & real time growth started in the Mobility Market Place.

The seminar will focus on:

    * Celebrating 50 Million CDMA Subscribers.
* CDMA Evolution for the Next Generation. » read more »

Sony Ericsson W660i

Sony Ericsson has announced the W660 – a Walkman® phone which places an emphasis on style and feel. With a tactile finish that just begs to be touched, it’s a classic-design 3G phone available in two distinctive colours, Record Black and Rose Red. Also introduced is a compact new music accessory, the Snap-on Speakers MPS-75, which let you play the tracks stored on your Walkman® phone out loud.

“The W660 has a finish that stands out among its peers,” explains Steve Walker, Head of Product Marketing at Sony Ericsson. “Although the W660 places the emphasis firmly on design, it is also a full member of our Walkman® phone family, able to store several hundred full-length songs. That’s important because our research indicates users are listening to more music than ever before – an average of 4.4 hours a day, according to the latest Sony Ericsson Music Monitor.” * » read more »

NTT DoCoMo Offers Secure 3G FOMA F903iBSC Handset for Business Use

NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and its eight regional subsidiaries announced that this month they will begin marketing the 3G FOMA™ F903iBSC business-use handset to enable companies to address security issues such as information leaks and non-work-related use of corporate phones.

NTT DoCoMo 3G FOMA™ F903iBSC

To avoid information leakage, the handset's camera, external memory, USB and infrared ports, and the Osaifu-Keitai™ e-wallet service are not available. In addition, the phonebook is limited to 101 entries.

Functions such as phonebook, e-mail, scheduler, data box, call records and screen memos can be reset remotely by DoCoMo at the request of the customer if a handset is lost. This service requires an optional subscription, and will be made available from April.

Security is further enhanced by a tool that automatically locks all functions when the handset is shut. Unlocking can be handled with biometric fingerprint authorization or a password. » read more »

EDGE

EDGE (enhanced data rates for GSM evolution)

Based on 8PSK modulation, EDGE provides 3G packet data throughput on GSM networks. (Cingular)

A technology that gives GSMA and TDMA similar capacity to handle services for the third generation of mobile telephony. EDGE was developed to enable the transmission of large amounts of data at a high speed, 384 kilobits per second. (Ericsson)

Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution, or EDGE, is a digital mobile phone technology which acts as a bolt-on enhancement to 2G and 2.5G General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) networks. This technology works in GSM networks. EDGE (also known as EGPRS) is a superset to GPRS and can function on any network with GPRS deployed on it, provided the carrier implements the necessary upgrades.

EDGE provides Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS), which can be used for any packet switched applications such as an Internet connection. High-speed data applications such as video services and other multimedia benefit from EGPRS' increased data capacity. EDGE Circuit Switched is a possible future development. » read more »

3G

3G (third-generation)

Third generation wireless employing wideband frequency carriers and a CDMA air interface. Networks must be able to transmit wireless data at 144 kilobits per second at mobile user speeds. (Cingular)

3G is a global development of communication standards and technologies. This development will lead to the ability to access multimedia services with your mobile phone. (Nokia)

3G (or 3-G) is short for third-generation technology. It is usually used in the context of cell phones. The services associated with 3G provide the ability to transfer both voice data (a telephone call) and non-voice data (such as downloading information, exchanging email, and instant messaging). » read more »

2G

2G

Second generation of mobile wireless, which utilizes various digital protocols, including GSM, CDMA, TDMA, iDEN, and PDC. (Cingular)

2G (or 2-G) is short for second-generation wireless telephone technology.

The main differentiator to previous mobile telephone systems, retroactively dubbed 1G, is that the radio signals that 1G networks use are analog, while 2G networks are digital. Note that both systems use digital signaling to connect the radio towers (which listen to the handsets) to the rest of the telephone system.

Flavors of 2G

2G technologies can be divided into TDMA-based and CDMA-based standards depending on the type of multiplexing used. The main 2G standards are:

    * GSM (TDMA-based), originally from Europe but used worldwide
* IDEN (TDMA-based), proprietary network used by Nextel in the United States and Telus Mobility in Canada
* IS-136 aka D-AMPS, (TDMA-based, commonly referred as simply TDMA in the US), used in the Americas
* IS-95 aka cdmaOne, (CDMA-based, commonly referred as simply CDMA in the US), used in the Americas and parts of Asia
* PDC (TDMA-based), used exclusively in Japan » read more »
