Bango technology powers revolutionary books-on-mobile service

January 28, 2008 – Bango announced today it is powering a revolutionary new service that turns the mobile phone into a personal “on the go” library. Bango’s billing and digital fingerprint technologies have enabled Macmillan Publishing Solutions (MPS) to create The Global Reader - a new service that gives consumers access to books, articles, newspapers and other print content on their mobile phone easily and inexpensively.

The MPS service is expected to shift the publishing world because it offers publishers a new distribution channel and provides a direct link with consumers. Because the Global Reader service is mobile-web based, publishers will be able to interact directly with customers and – using Bango technology – receive detailed information about customers.

The Global Reader will enhance the way people access printed material. "We never envisioned people would want to read War and Peace on their phones," said Bob Kasher, one of the developers and originators of The Global Reader. "What we responded to was the idea that millions of people have mobile phones in their pockets." » read more »

Ortiva Wireless Streams Mobile Media with IBM BladeCenter

IBM Improves Video Streaming Input by Up to 500 Percent

ARMONK, NY - 15 Aug 2007: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Ortiva Wireless has redesigned its entire IT infrastructure by replacing its Dell rack servers with IBM BladeCenter servers, enabling a core component of its business to run up to 500 percent faster.
The California-based company made its Mobile Content Delivery Network or Mobile-CDN available this year to its clients, which include mobile network operators, MVNOs, and content providers. Ortiva's purpose-built for mobile video streaming software sends clear video and audio content to cell phones and mobile devices by shaping streams in response to feedback from handsets. Wireless networks can often distort the media content because of network bandwidth fluctuation; Ortiva adapts individual streams based on real-time network conditions. » read more »

Warner Bros. Records Puts Singer on Map with Low-Cost Mobile-to-Web Viral Marketing Tool

Ashley Tisdale, the 21-year-old actress whose debut album for Warner Bros. Records bowed at #5 last month, has become the first performing artist to make the charts on her freshman outing with the aid of an Internet-enabled camera phone. The strategy hatched by the record label has turned Tisdale into a YouTube star and helped drive over 65,000 first week sales of her “Headstrong” CD. Ashley’s first single, “Be Good To Me” is currently climbing the Top 40 radio chart, with Z100 (NYC) leading the pack.

Using a handset equipped with one-click image uploading technology from ShoZu Inc., Tisdale has created and posted dozens of personal behind-the-scenes videos that have generated more than 6.7 million YouTube views at an average of 225,000 views per clip. Her YouTube channel has ranked #4 in the music category for months and is the #5 most-viewed of all channels this month. » read more »

Mobile Streams Plans to Kick-start LBS

Start-up Connectid is so keen to get location-based content services moving that it’s going to make its own handsets to ‘front load’ the market.

The New York-based company, run by content giant Mobile Streams, will launch in August with the aim of transforming the part played by location in mobile entertainment.

It claims to have created a chip that can improve the LBS capabilities of GSM devices, using Assisted GPS (AGPS). But rather than wait for the major manufacturers to engage, it will make its own handsets and sell them direct to operators. The company will also make single-purpose location-aware devices such as pet collars.

“The big vendors always start with high-end handsets, but we want to create services that everyone can use,” said Simon Buckingham, CEO of Mobile Streams and Connectid. “If we build these location-based applications into our own devices, we can make them genuinely tangible for people.”

These services could include: location-sensitive ads; social networking that lets users tell friends that they’re nearby; location-aware gaming; city guides and maps; localised search; pet tagging and more. » read more »
