Johannesburg, South Africa and Espoo, Finland, April 02, 2008 -- Nokia, the South African Government's Department of Education and not for profit organization Mindset Network today announced the launch of "M4Girls", an innovative pilot project using Nokia 6300 mobile phones loaded with educational material to help improve mathematics performance of Grade 10 girl learners.

"This project demonstrates the potential of mobile phones to enable social development and improve education especially in underprivileged areas, " says Micheline Ntiru, Head of Nokia's Community Involvement Programs in the Middle East and Africa. "Young people are increasingly using their phones to gain knowledge via the internet, social networking and interaction with their peers, so it makes sense to introduce learning through these devices. By combining Nokia handsets with innovative content, and the enthusiasm of the teachers and pupils this scheme creates an opportunity to really help create new skills and opportunities." » read more »

Nokia Reaches 40 Percent Global Share as Mobile Phone Shipments Hit 1.12 Billion Units in 2007

Boston, MA - January 24, 2008 - According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global mobile phone shipments grew a modest 12 percent year-over-year, to reach 1.12 billion units in 2007. Nokia had a strong fourth quarter and reached 40 percent share for the first time ever.

Bonny Joy, Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, "Global cellphone shipments rose to 1.12 billion units in 2007, up 12 percent from 1.00 billion in 2006. We expect the economic environment to be tougher this year and forecast slower growth of 10 percent, for 1.24 billion units worldwide in 2008."

Neil Mawston, Director at Strategy Analytics, added, "During the fourth quarter of 2007, 332 million mobile phones were shipped globally. Nokia was the star performer, registering a record 40% share. Despite fierce competition from ambitious rivals such as Samsung and Apple, Nokia still managed to gain ground last year. A famous brand, attractive handset lineup, strong technology portfolio and the industry's best logistics have enabled Nokia to achieve this impressive milestone."

Other findings from the Strategy Analytics Q4 2007 Global Handset Market Share Update report include: » read more »

3’s 15 million worldwide subscribers can now easily discover ShoZu’s service on the 3neXt site, review user comments and ratings, and click through to ShoZu.com to download the ShoZu application on their X-Series phones free of charge. 3’s X-Series pricing structure provides mobile data services for a flat fee on top of the user’s basic subscription, enabling consumers to use ShoZu’s service to send images to their preferred Web communities as part of the X-Series flat-fee package without additional upload and download charges. » read more »

New Nokia security appliances go deep to find threats

Meet growing network performance demands

Nokia (NYSE:NOK) has announced two new IP security appliances, Nokia IP290 and Nokia IP690 security platforms, rolling out a scalable hardware platform design offering better IT investment protection and a greater choice of security software applications to address emerging threats to company networks and data.

Nokia IP690 is the first new IP security appliance with a multi-core and multi-threading architecture optimized for performance and scalability, readying businesses for processor-intensive security applications. The new hardware design offers investment protection by extending product life from two years to an average of five years. Nokia hardware platforms purchased today are upgradeable when newer versions of the Nokia IPSO(TM) operating system are released, and Nokia IP690 is expandable through various interface cards and accelerated data path (ADP card) technologies. This expandable approach allows customers to retain their initial investment for longer periods of time by offering the flexibility to expand performance at their own pace. » read more »

Momentum builds around GSMA’s pay-buy mobile project

Nokia joins leading operators and handset makers in global initiative to enable mobile phones to be used in retail outlets to pay for goods and services

Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone maker, and a further 10 mobile operators have thrown their weight behind a GSM Association initiative to enable the worldwide use of mobile phones for payments at retail outlets.

KPN, Maxis Communications Bhd, mobilkom austria, O2, Orange, SFR, SingTel, SKT, Vodafone and Wind have joined the 14 mobile operators* that initiated the project in February. The handset vendors in the programme include Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which both plan to participate in the first trials scheduled to begin in October.

The GSMA’s 'Pay-Buy Mobile' initiative seeks to define a common global approach to using Near Field Communications (NFC) technology to link mobile devices with payment and contactless systems. Together with a SIM/Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) card in a mobile handset, NFC can be used to enable a wide range of secure, interoperable and transparent services, such as credit and debit payments. » read more »

Qualcomm is the Largest User of Nokia Technology, Patents

ESPOO, Finland, April 13/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today rejected Qualcomm's public statements that it does not use Nokia patents. Nokia has for the last fifteen years contributed its technology to industry standards, such as GSM, WCDMA and CDMA. If Qualcomm's products comply with industry standards it is in the same position as any other supplier of mobile technology in that it needs access to Nokia's patents covering standardized technologies.

Nokia believes that Qualcomm is currently using over one hundred of Nokia's GSM/WCDMA and CDMA2000 essential patents in its chipsets. Nokia and Qualcomm are yet to agree on the compensation payable by Qualcomm for such patents. With its more than 200 million units annually, Qualcomm is the largest user in the world of Nokia's technology and patents. Nokia's request for royalty payments from Qualcomm is based on royalty levels which are fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND).

Since the early 1990's Nokia has invested over $35 billion in R&D and built one of the wireless industry's strongest and broadest IPR portfolios with over 11,000 patent families. » read more »

Nokia Sues Qualcomm for Patent Exhaustion in Germany and the Netherlands

Nokia announced today that it has filed complaints against Qualcomm in Germany and the Netherlands requesting declarations that Qualcomm's European patents are exhausted in respect of products placed on the European Union (EU) market with a Qualcomm license, in this instance chipsets supplied by Texas Instruments. Texas Instruments and Qualcomm are publicly known to have entered into a so called Patent Portfolio License in 2000.

If Nokia's claim succeeds, Qualcomm would be prevented in Europe from enforcing its respective patents in relation to Nokia handsets incorporating such chipsets.

The complaints were filed in the Regional Court of Mannheim (Germany) and in the Hague District Court (the Netherlands); both courts have substantial experience in patent matters within the EU.

Since the early 90's Nokia has invested approximately €30 billion in research and development and built one of the wireless industry's strongest and broadest IPR portfolios with over 11,000 patent families. Nokia is a world leader in the development of GSM technologies, and its evolution to WCDMA, which is also demonstrated by Nokia's strong patent position in these technologies. » read more »
