NMT

NMT (Nordic mobile telephone)

NMT (Nordic mobile telephone)

An older analog cellular protocol used in Europe and elsewhere. (Cingular)

The common Nordic standard for analog mobile telephony as established by the telecommunications administrations in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark in the early 1980s. NMT systems have also been installed in some European countries, including parts of Russia, and in the Middle East and Asia. (Ericsson)

NMT (Nordisk MobilTelefoni or Nordiska MobilTelefoni-gruppen, Nordic Mobile Telephone in English) is a mobile phone system that was specified by the Nordic telecommunications administrations (PTTs) starting in 1970, and opened for service in 1981 as a response to the increasing congestion and heavy requirements of the manual mobile phone networks: ARP (150 MHz) in Finland and MTD (450 MHz) in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. NMT is based on analog technology (first generation or 1G) and two variants exist: NMT-450 and NMT-900. The numbers indicate the frequency bands uses. NMT-900 was introduced in 1986 because it carries more channels than the previous NMT-450 network.

Analog

Analog

In telecommunications, a shortened version of the term "analog transmission," which is a way of sending signals- voice, video or data - in which the transmitted signal is "analogous to," or like, the original signal. The traditional method of modulating radio signals so that they can carry information.

The simple way to transmit speech. The first networks for mobile phones were analog. Analog systems include AMPS, NMT and ETACS. (Ericsson)

A transmission method or way of sending voice, video and data using signals (such as electricity or sound waves) that are continuously variable rather than discreet units as in digital transmissions. In the context of wireless communications, analogue refers to transmission networks built in the 1980s and that use analogue technology rather than digital. See also Digital. (Nokia)

The technological basis for most current cellular systems. Primarily designed to transmit sound waves, as in conversations. (Motorola)
