TeliaSonera: Keep better track of your dog with your mobile

05/09/2007 -- The worst nightmare for all dog owners would be to lose their darling pet. However, Sweden’s 700,000 dog owners can soon keep better track of their doggy with the help of their mobile phone and a GPS receiver that is attached to the dog’s collar. If an SMS message is sent to the GPS unit, it replies by sending an SMS or MMS message with text or a map image indicating where the dog is located.

Every year approximately 15,000 dogs disappear now and then from their owners and many have wished for a simple way to find their runaway pet. The companies Petlink Development and M-Tech have therefore developed a GPS receiver for dogs, which owners can use to find their pet using GPS navigation and mobile communications.

Petlink has chosen to use a Telia subscription in the GPS unit in order to have the best possible mobile coverage. The subscription costs SEK 79 per month and can be connected to all models of mobile phones, regardless of the type of subscription. In mid-May, the product will have its world premier and will be available for purchase in around 40 pet stores in Sweden. » read more »

Mobile Streams Plans to Kick-start LBS

Start-up Connectid is so keen to get location-based content services moving that it’s going to make its own handsets to ‘front load’ the market.

The New York-based company, run by content giant Mobile Streams, will launch in August with the aim of transforming the part played by location in mobile entertainment.

It claims to have created a chip that can improve the LBS capabilities of GSM devices, using Assisted GPS (AGPS). But rather than wait for the major manufacturers to engage, it will make its own handsets and sell them direct to operators. The company will also make single-purpose location-aware devices such as pet collars.

“The big vendors always start with high-end handsets, but we want to create services that everyone can use,” said Simon Buckingham, CEO of Mobile Streams and Connectid. “If we build these location-based applications into our own devices, we can make them genuinely tangible for people.”

These services could include: location-sensitive ads; social networking that lets users tell friends that they’re nearby; location-aware gaming; city guides and maps; localised search; pet tagging and more. » read more »

Aliant Mobility and Golumbo introduce GPS-enabled dispatching

Bathurst Police Department implements new Fleet Management and Dispatch Solution in their community

Saint John, NB - Organizations such as the Bathurst Police Department now have the advantage of GPS-enabled dispatching for their fleet management and dispatch service, as the result of collaboration with Golumbo, a Halifax based ICT and Mobile Professional Services organization, and Aliant, Atlantic Canada's leading information and communications technology provider.

Aliant Mobility introduced Golumbo's Fleet Management Solution to the City of Bathurst while working closely with them to find a suitable communications solution for their department. "We had some very unique requirements on a small budget to be able to implement this solution," said Edward Huzulak, Chief of Police for the Bathurst Police Department. "We wanted the data to remain on our premise, not hosted somewhere on the Internet, and it had to provide customizable reports and real-time tracking capabilities for our dispatchers." » read more »

GPS

GPS (global positioning system)

A series of 24 geosynchronous satellites that continuously transmit their position. Used in personal tracking, navigation and automatic vehicle location technologies. (Cingular)

The Global Positioning System, usually called GPS, is the only fully-functional satellite navigation system. A constellation of more than two dozen GPS satellites broadcasts precise timing signals by radio to GPS receivers, allowing them to accurately determine their location (longitude, latitude, and altitude) in any weather, day or night, anywhere on Earth.

GPS has become a vital global utility, indispensable for modern navigation on land, sea, and air around the world, as well as an important tool for map-making, and land surveying. GPS also provides an extremely precise time reference, required for telecommunications and some scientific research, including the study of earthquakes. » read more »

AVL

AVL (automatic vehicle location)

Combining a location-sensing device (such as a GPS receiver) with a wireless communications link to provide a home office or dispatcher with the location of a vehicle or mobile asset (such as a trailer or heavy machinery). (Cingular)

Automatic vehicle location is a means for determining the location of a vehicle and transmitting this information to a point where it can be used.

Most commonly, the location is determined using GPS, and the transmission mechanism is a radio or cellular connection from the vehicle to a receiver or nearby cell tower. Some other possibilities for determining location, for example in environments where GPS is not usable, are dead reckoning, inertial navigation, or RFID readers; sometimes a combination of these methods can be used. The tracking data is then transmitted using any one of a variety of telemetry systems; GSM is one of the most common technologies used for telemetry, because of the low data rate needed for AVL, and the low cost and near-ubiquitous nature of GSM networks. » read more »
