Cellular One Puts Its Network on "Fast Track"

Wireless Provider Aggressively Expanding Service Nationwide

Cellular One from Dobson Cellular Systems – an independent provider of wireless service to rural America – today said its “2007 Network Fast Track” plan will expand its coverage for thousands of the customers it serves.

Under the strategic plan developed and implemented by Cellular One’s Network Quality Assurance Team, by end of the second quarter the company will turn on 75% of its new cell sites that it will build this year.

“Fast Track gives us the ability to hit the ground running in 2007,” said Timothy J. Duffy, Chief Technical Officer and Senior Vice President. “We will add as many new cell sites in six months as we would have added in nine months. The result is better coverage, fewer dropped calls, increased capacity and an overall enhanced wireless experience sooner for our customers.”

Cellular One, which operates GSM/GPRS/EDGE voice and data networks in 17 states, plans to build approximately 300 new cell sites this year, he said. » read more »

Power Amplifiers, Front-end Modules and Transceivers

According to the Strategy Analytics GaAs service report on 3GSM 2007, suppliers of power amplifiers, front-end modules and transceivers emphasized their strong product mixes to provision custom solutions at handset OEMs -- including cost-effective solutions for emerging regional markets and leading-edge products to meet the challenges of W-CDMA and beyond. Details on these products are can be found in "3GSM 2007 Show Report: Power Amplifiers, Front-end Modules and Transceivers."

GPRS handsets will continue to make up a significant portion of the cellular handset market, especially in emerging regional markets, while the momentum behind 3G/3.5G, and its successors, emphasizes requirements for multi-mode and multi-band architectures. GaAs device manufacturers demonstrated products at both ends of the spectrum. » read more »

EDGE

EDGE (enhanced data rates for GSM evolution)

Based on 8PSK modulation, EDGE provides 3G packet data throughput on GSM networks. (Cingular)

A technology that gives GSMA and TDMA similar capacity to handle services for the third generation of mobile telephony. EDGE was developed to enable the transmission of large amounts of data at a high speed, 384 kilobits per second. (Ericsson)

Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution, or EDGE, is a digital mobile phone technology which acts as a bolt-on enhancement to 2G and 2.5G General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) networks. This technology works in GSM networks. EDGE (also known as EGPRS) is a superset to GPRS and can function on any network with GPRS deployed on it, provided the carrier implements the necessary upgrades.

EDGE provides Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS), which can be used for any packet switched applications such as an Internet connection. High-speed data applications such as video services and other multimedia benefit from EGPRS' increased data capacity. EDGE Circuit Switched is a possible future development. » read more »

CSD (Circuit Switched Data)

CSD (Circuit Switched Data)

CSD allows a user to use their wireless handset as a modem for laptops, PDAs and other electronic devices via infrared ports or designated data cables. CSD also allows a user to access Wireless Internet via their wireless handset (handset must be WAP compatible). (Cingular)

Circuit Switched Data, often referred to as CSD, is the original form of data transmission developed for the TDMA-based mobile phone systems like GSM. CSD uses a single radio time slot to deliver 9.6 Kbits/sec data transmission to the GSM Network and Switching Subsystem where it could be connected through the equivalent of a normal modem to the PSTN allowing direct calls to any dial up service. As of 2006, some GSM-based service providers, Cingular et al, still provide CSD by request. » read more »
