New Technology Enhancements Featured in Qualcomm’s Chipsets Offer Doubled Voice Capacity for CDMA2000 Networks

LAS VEGAS, April 01, 2008 — Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies and data solutions, today announced new enhancements to CDMA2000® network technology. Operators will now be able to support more than double today's capacity of 35 simultaneous calls in 1.25 MHz of spectrum while delivering the same level of voice quality. The new levels of efficiency not only meet the growing demand for voice connectivity, but also enable the freed-up bandwidth to be used to expand 3G data services, enabling operators to maximize their 3G network investments for voice and mobile broadband. This flexibility is critical to promote an economical rollout of next-generation networks - concentrating 4G technology deployment in areas where more bandwidth is required and leveraging the optimized 3G network for systemwide voice and data services. » read more »

Qualcomm is the Largest User of Nokia Technology, Patents

ESPOO, Finland, April 13/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today rejected Qualcomm's public statements that it does not use Nokia patents. Nokia has for the last fifteen years contributed its technology to industry standards, such as GSM, WCDMA and CDMA. If Qualcomm's products comply with industry standards it is in the same position as any other supplier of mobile technology in that it needs access to Nokia's patents covering standardized technologies.

Nokia believes that Qualcomm is currently using over one hundred of Nokia's GSM/WCDMA and CDMA2000 essential patents in its chipsets. Nokia and Qualcomm are yet to agree on the compensation payable by Qualcomm for such patents. With its more than 200 million units annually, Qualcomm is the largest user in the world of Nokia's technology and patents. Nokia's request for royalty payments from Qualcomm is based on royalty levels which are fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND).

Since the early 1990's Nokia has invested over $35 billion in R&D and built one of the wireless industry's strongest and broadest IPR portfolios with over 11,000 patent families. » read more »

CDMA2000

CDMA2000

CDMA2000 is a radio transmission technology for the evolution of narrowband cdmaOne/IS-95 to 3rd-generation adding up multiple carriers. See also WCDMA for single carrier/direct spread technology. (Ericsson)

CDMA2000 is a family of third-generation (3G) mobile telecommunications standards that use CDMA, a multiple access scheme for digital radio, to send voice, data, and signalling data (such as a dialed telephone number) between mobile phones and cell sites. It is the second generation of CDMA digital cellular. » read more »
