AOL Announces New Open Mobile Software Platform

February 11, 2008 -- AOL today announced the AOL Open Mobile Platform, which it plans to make available to developers this summer. The new open platform will help stimulate innovation by providing developers with ready access to the tools and source code they need to build and distribute applications across all major mobile device platforms and operating systems including BREW, Java, Linux, RIM, Symbian, and Windows Mobile. As a result, developers will be able to create applications for a wide variety of mobile devices.

The AOL Open Mobile Platform is based on proven technology acquired by AOL that has been deployed across more than 150 different handsets on carrier networks in the U.S. The platform will consist of three components: an XML-based, next-generation markup language; an ultra-lightweight mobile device client; and an application server. A dynamic presentation layer will allow for rapid deployment of new features and easy optimization for a wide variety of mobile devices, allowing developers to build and update applications once, and then distribute them across all supported devices and platforms. » read more »

Warner Bros. Records Puts Singer on Map with Low-Cost Mobile-to-Web Viral Marketing Tool

Ashley Tisdale, the 21-year-old actress whose debut album for Warner Bros. Records bowed at #5 last month, has become the first performing artist to make the charts on her freshman outing with the aid of an Internet-enabled camera phone. The strategy hatched by the record label has turned Tisdale into a YouTube star and helped drive over 65,000 first week sales of her “Headstrong” CD. Ashley’s first single, “Be Good To Me” is currently climbing the Top 40 radio chart, with Z100 (NYC) leading the pack.

Using a handset equipped with one-click image uploading technology from ShoZu Inc., Tisdale has created and posted dozens of personal behind-the-scenes videos that have generated more than 6.7 million YouTube views at an average of 225,000 views per clip. Her YouTube channel has ranked #4 in the music category for months and is the #5 most-viewed of all channels this month. » read more »

Report Finds Windows Mobile Outlook Easiest to Configure

Strong User Preference for On-Device Wizard

The Strategy Analytics Wireless Device Lab has recently released its latest end user benchmark report, "Windows Mobile Outlook Easiest to Configure: Beats BlackBerry BIS, Nokia S60 and UIQ v3.0 Email Clients," which concludes that users find Windows Mobile Pocket Outlook to be the easiest mobile email client to configure for a POP3 email account.

Achieving a 100% success rate, Pocket Outlook also outperformed its competitors for speed and user satisfaction. The BlackBerry Internet Service suffered fatal email configuration challenges, while discoverability was an issue for Nokia Series 60.

"Participants showed a strong preference for an on-device wizard approach to email setup" according to Paul Brown, User Experience Analyst at Strategy Analytics. "Step-by-step guidance through the setup process makes it very difficult for participants to actually go wrong." » read more »
