Increased Handset Choice Will Not Aid DVB-H Mobile TV Growth

Multiple Mobile TV Standards Fragmenting Global Opportunity

Strategy Analytics finds that a quagmire of regulatory delays is hampering Mobile TV spectrum availability in Europe, as described in its recent report, "Enabling Technologies: Entertainment At Heart Of OEMs Brand & Profit Strategies." These delays will only delay DVB-H adoption over the next two to three years.

"These regulatory delays, combined with the success of ISDB-T in Japan, the momentum of DMB services in Korea, the commitment of the two largest operators in the US to using MediaFLO, and the rising chorus of support for MBMS in 3GPP2 will create a much more fragmented mid-term for mobile TV adoption globally," states Chris Ambrosio, Director in the Wireless Practice at Strategy Analytics. » read more »

Swedish football moves into Telia mobile phones

Starting in April, Telia’s customers in Sweden can start watching international football games and matches from the premier division of the Swedish football league right on their mobile phones. This new mobile television service is the result of a four-year agreement that Telia has signed to get the exclusive rights to broadcast Swedish football games on mobile phones. The agreement covers both live broadcasts and post-match summaries.

In the first phase, Telia customers will be offered live broadcasts of premier division games as part of the television programming package available through Telia’s SurfPort mobile portal. Viewers can choose if they prefer to watch live broadcasts or receive post-game summaries. The agreement also enables Telia to offer services such as game results and the broadcast of exclusive material during and after football matches. » read more »

Frost & Sullivan Recognizes IPWireless, Inc. for Commitment to Constant Innovation in Mobile Multimedia Solutions

Frost & Sullivan presented California-based IPWireless, Inc. with the 2007 Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation of the Year Award for its development of a pioneering mobile TV/multimedia solution. The solution, TDtv, is based on its time division code division multiple access (TD-CDMA) technology, along with multimedia broadcast and multicast services (MBMS).

This is a truly innovative solution that is set to capitalize on consumers' growing interest in accessing TV on their mobile phones and will allow them to experience high-performance mobile TV at reasonable costs.

Undeniably, delivery technologies, whether network-based or broadcast, are critical to the future of mobile TV. Capacity is already a key issue and will become an even more critical one as consumer demand begins to outstrip wireless network capacity.

Consumer preferences for mobile television will evolve with linear and on-demand programming that is personalized, interactive, location aware and time independent. » read more »

Stuttgart, March 8, 2007 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) is demonstrating, for the first time in Germany, seamless access on a single device to a selection of Mobile TV channels delivered via either 3G or broadcast networks, including German language channels RTL Mobile TV, National Geographic Channel and Eurosport. This demonstration, which is taking place in Alcatel-Lucent’s premises in Stuttgart in front of representatives from German operators and TV broadcasters, is based on the new DVB-SH mobile broadcast standard using the S-Band.

Thanks to Alcatel-Lucent’s Mobile interactive TV solution, users are also able to interact with the content of all the 3G and broadcast Mobile TV channels available on the terminal. This achievement is opening the way to a truly interactive and personalized Mobile TV experience for the mass market and to the provisioning of new services offered as a complement to Mobile TV such as voting, content downloading or mobile commerce. These features also enable the delivery of personalized advertisements to mobile TV viewers. » read more »
