Cellular South to Launch Multi-City Wireless Wallet Consumer Trial with Prototype Kyocera Device and Cutting-edge Near Field Communication (NFC) Technology

Cellular South, a privately held wireless provider, and Kyocera Wireless Corp. (KWC), a global supplier of CDMA wireless devices and accessories, today announced a collaboration to launch a multi-city consumer trial for its new Wireless Wallet technology. Kicking off mid-May 2007 in Memphis, Tenn. and Jackson, Miss., Cellular South's Wireless Wallet trial is the first of its kind for a U.S. regional carrier.

Cellular South and Kyocera Wireless will begin a community-wide Wireless Wallet trial that allows participants the opportunity to use the technology at multiple retail locations in multiple trial cities. Participants will be equipped with a Wireless Wallet-enabled Kyocera cell phone which acts as a digital credit card that allows Cellular South customers to make payments and purchases by tapping it against a NFC-enabled wireless reader. The company plans to complete the trial by August 2007, with an anticipated widespread consumer roll-out of Wireless Wallet in Q4 2007. » read more »

To avoid information leakage, the handset's camera, external memory, USB and infrared ports, and the Osaifu-Keitai™ e-wallet service are not available. In addition, the phonebook is limited to 101 entries.

Functions such as phonebook, e-mail, scheduler, data box, call records and screen memos can be reset remotely by DoCoMo at the request of the customer if a handset is lost. This service requires an optional subscription, and will be made available from April.

Security is further enhanced by a tool that automatically locks all functions when the handset is shut.

Solution Ensures Complete Traceability for Food Manufacturer Meeting FDA Regulations

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. -- 06 March 2007 -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and PartnerSelect Solution Provider Portable Technology Solutions (PTS) today announced that Ce De Candy Inc., manufacturer and distributor of SMARTIES®, the classic sugar candy line, has implemented an enterprise mobility solution to meet the FDA’s new Food Bioterrorism regulation while also increasing the efficiency and accuracy of manufacturing processes throughout its supply chain and warehouse.

The FDA regulation required that food manufacturers maintain records that allow complete traceability for all raw goods and manufactured products by June 2006. To meet the critical mandate, Ce De implemented a mobility solution consisting of the Motorola MC9000 rugged mobile computer running PTS’s TracerPlus software, as well as the Motorola WS5100 Wireless Switch, AP300 Access Ports and the ES3000 with Power over Ethernet (PoE) Switch. The solution was configured to existing processes at Ce De Candy within one week, with full deployment being finalized within the following four weeks. » read more »

Paul Fulton discusses the importance of mobile integration with enterprise-wide unified communications

March 5, 2007 -- Mobility is no longer a niche technology for sales and field service teams in businesses; it is becoming an indispensable tool for all employees. According to IDC, 28 percent of enterprise employees use their mobile phone as their primary business phone. But until recently mobile phones were used largely as consumer devices and were not well integrated into the unified communications systems at many enterprises.

Cisco's recent acquisition of mobile software company Orative has added a powerful new dimension to the Cisco Unified Communications system. In this interview, Cisco's Senior Director of Mobile Unified Communications Paul Fulton sat down to talk about Cisco's strategy, products and vision for mobile unified communications.

Before we discuss the impact of mobility on enterprise communications, let's start by defining Unified Communications. » read more »
