SeaMobile to Deploy UTStarcom's MovingMedia(R) 2000 All-IP Network Solution to Deliver Wireless GSM Voice and Data Services at S

UTStarcom, Inc. (Nasdaq: UTSI), a global leader in IP-based, end-to-end networking solutions and services, today announced deployment of its MovingMedia(R) 2000 core network solution with SeaMobile, Inc., a leading provider of advanced at-sea wireless voice communications and data applications, to provide wireless GSM voice and data services at sea.

Today's announcement marks the first deployment of UTStarcom's new MovingMedia 2000 all-IP GSM network solution. In October 2006, UTStarcom announced deployment of its MovingMedia(TM) 2000 all-IP core network solution with SeaMobile to deliver wireless CDMA voice and data services.

"UTStarcom's MovingMedia all-IP wireless network technology provides a flexible platform for mobile operators to deliver both CDMA and GSM wireless voice and data services to their end users over the same core infrastructure," said Jack Mar, president of the CDMA/GSM division at UTStarcom, Inc. "With all traffic being routed via satellite transmission back to a unified core network, our carrier customers can deploy both GSM and CDMA base stations to help ensure that all wireless users -- regardless of the service they use - have sufficient coverage." » read more »

Nortel Completes Industry's First Call over Ultra Mobile Broadband Network

Nortel Able to Deliver High Bandwidth Multimedia Over Any Major 4G Technology

Nortel said it has achieved the industry’s first live call over an Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) network delivering high-definition video and VoIP. With this demonstration, Nortel is the first in the industry to complete live calls using MIMO advanced antenna technology in each of the major 4G technologies - WiMAX, Long Term Evolution (LTE), and UMB.

The UMB call demonstrates Nortel’s ability to deliver a personal wireless broadband experience anywhere, anytime over 4G networks with high-quality services such as video-conferencing, live video-streaming, and VoIP. Using Nortel’s IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and UMB technologies, crisp and clear voice conversations can be delivered with other high bandwidth applications running simultaneously on the network. Voice calls can also be maintained across multiple networks, meaning users can roam from UMB coverage to 2G without interruptions in their conversations using Nortel’s VoiceCall Continuity (VCC) based handover. » read more »

This member-based initiative will help accelerate the adoption of VoIP and IMS-based services via IP interconnection, and reduce the associated integration costs by helping to ensure that network elements and operations support systems (OSSs) interoperate with the Telcordia® Service Interconnection Registry.

Acme Packet, NetNumber, NexTone and Nominum are the first community members, all having successfully completed Telcordia's interoperability tests, a requirement for the community membership. » read more »

VOIP

VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol)

A technology for transmitting ordinary telephone calls over the Internet using packet-linked routes. Also called IP telephony. (Ericsson)

Voice over Internet Protocol (also called VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet telephony, and Broadband Phone) is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network. The voice data flows over a general-purpose packet-switched network, instead of dedicated legacy circuit-switched telephony transmission lines.

Protocols used to carry voice signals over the IP network are commonly referred to as Voice over IP or VoIP protocols. They may be viewed as commercial realizations of the experimental Network Voice Protocol (1973) invented for the ARPANET.

Voice over IP traffic can be deployed on any IP network, including ones lacking a connection to the rest of the Internet, for instance on a private building-wide LAN.
