Cellular One Puts Its Network on "Fast Track"

Wireless Provider Aggressively Expanding Service Nationwide

Cellular One from Dobson Cellular Systems – an independent provider of wireless service to rural America – today said its “2007 Network Fast Track” plan will expand its coverage for thousands of the customers it serves.

Under the strategic plan developed and implemented by Cellular One’s Network Quality Assurance Team, by end of the second quarter the company will turn on 75% of its new cell sites that it will build this year.

“Fast Track gives us the ability to hit the ground running in 2007,” said Timothy J. Duffy, Chief Technical Officer and Senior Vice President. “We will add as many new cell sites in six months as we would have added in nine months. The result is better coverage, fewer dropped calls, increased capacity and an overall enhanced wireless experience sooner for our customers.”

Cellular One, which operates GSM/GPRS/EDGE voice and data networks in 17 states, plans to build approximately 300 new cell sites this year, he said. » read more »

MATERNA allows for a quick configuration of more than 200 mobile phone types

Anny Way OTA-Server for more ease of use

MATERNA Information & Communications’ new Anny Way OTA-Server (Over-the-Air) puts an end to complicated and time consuming configurations of mobile phones. The telecommunications specialist has developed an internet portal which allows the user and the call center agent to configure the end device for WAP and GPRS settings.

The handling is as follows: the consumer visits a special web site, selects his network operator and the service he wants as well as the type of his mobile and queries the settings. The basis for this is a device portfolio with more than 200 devices, which is monthly extended by MATERNA’s Device Management by up to 10 new devices. With only a few mouse clicks and the entry of his mobile number, the customer receives an SMS that automatically configures his hardware. The service can be used immediately afterwards. » read more »

Sony Ericsson W660i

Sony Ericsson has announced the W660 – a Walkman® phone which places an emphasis on style and feel. With a tactile finish that just begs to be touched, it’s a classic-design 3G phone available in two distinctive colours, Record Black and Rose Red. Also introduced is a compact new music accessory, the Snap-on Speakers MPS-75, which let you play the tracks stored on your Walkman® phone out loud.

“The W660 has a finish that stands out among its peers,” explains Steve Walker, Head of Product Marketing at Sony Ericsson. “Although the W660 places the emphasis firmly on design, it is also a full member of our Walkman® phone family, able to store several hundred full-length songs. That’s important because our research indicates users are listening to more music than ever before – an average of 4.4 hours a day, according to the latest Sony Ericsson Music Monitor.” * » read more »

SGSN

SGSN (serving GPRS support node)

The GPRS network element that provides the direct customer interface. (Cingular)

The SGSN is the node which in some sense carries out the same function as the Foreign Agent in Mobile IP. However, an SGSN is actually considerably more complex since it also does the full set of interworking with the connected radio network. This means that the functions carried out by the SGSN vary quite considerably between GSM and UMTS. (Wikipedia)

GPRS

GPRS (general packet radio service)

A GSM data transmission technique that does not set up a continuous channel from a portable terminal for the transmission and reception of data, but transmits and receives data in packets. It makes very efficient use of available radio spectrum, and users pay only for the volume of data sent and received. (Cingular)

General Packet Radio Service is a wireless data transmission service based on packet transmission. For example, if an email is sent by GPRS it will be reduced into .packets. of information. Each individual packet travels to its destination by the quickest possible route. This means the different packets from the same mail can travel separately through foreign networks around the globe in order to avoid obstructions. At the pre-set destination they are rebuilt and presented to the recipient as a whole. GPRS offers instant access, and permanent connection between the mobile device and the network. With GPRS you only pay for information sent or received, rather than for connection time. (Nokia) » read more »

EDGE

EDGE (enhanced data rates for GSM evolution)

Based on 8PSK modulation, EDGE provides 3G packet data throughput on GSM networks. (Cingular)

A technology that gives GSMA and TDMA similar capacity to handle services for the third generation of mobile telephony. EDGE was developed to enable the transmission of large amounts of data at a high speed, 384 kilobits per second. (Ericsson)

Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution, or EDGE, is a digital mobile phone technology which acts as a bolt-on enhancement to 2G and 2.5G General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) networks. This technology works in GSM networks. EDGE (also known as EGPRS) is a superset to GPRS and can function on any network with GPRS deployed on it, provided the carrier implements the necessary upgrades.

EDGE provides Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS), which can be used for any packet switched applications such as an Internet connection. High-speed data applications such as video services and other multimedia benefit from EGPRS' increased data capacity. EDGE Circuit Switched is a possible future development. » read more »
