Increased Handset Choice Will Not Aid DVB-H Mobile TV Growth

Multiple Mobile TV Standards Fragmenting Global Opportunity

Strategy Analytics finds that a quagmire of regulatory delays is hampering Mobile TV spectrum availability in Europe, as described in its recent report, "Enabling Technologies: Entertainment At Heart Of OEMs Brand & Profit Strategies." These delays will only delay DVB-H adoption over the next two to three years.

"These regulatory delays, combined with the success of ISDB-T in Japan, the momentum of DMB services in Korea, the commitment of the two largest operators in the US to using MediaFLO, and the rising chorus of support for MBMS in 3GPP2 will create a much more fragmented mid-term for mobile TV adoption globally," states Chris Ambrosio, Director in the Wireless Practice at Strategy Analytics. » read more »

Ojom GmbH, a creator and publisher of mobile games, has announced the launch of The Big Lebowski Bowling. Taking its title from the cult classic movie and featuring the ‘The Dude’ himself, Jeffrey Lebowski, this homage to ten-pin bowling gives mobile gamers the chance to test their bowling skills and take part in competitions.

Fans of bowling and aficionados of the movie will relish the challenge of taking on some of the game’s larger than life characters, in a series of 10 frame duels to win the tournament. Despite the backdrop to the film and the references to the nuances of the dude’s character this is still a straight game of bowling. So get ready to roll and build up steady score of double and triples to reach the magic 300 – a perfect game. Each shot has a power level for speed and precision, it also has a spin function that helps you avoid rolling into the gutter, a technique that makes you look really skilful too. » read more »

EMI Records has announced an initiative to enable its artists to document and share their day-to-day activities with music fans directly from their camera phones through a partnership with ShoZu, a provider of mobile media exchange services. Artists equipped with ShoZu-enabled mobile phones will now be able to transfer photos and video clips from their handsets to a wide variety of web destinations with a click, giving fans a near-real-time window into performers’ lives.

ShoZu’s service provides an easy and compelling way for an artist to create bite-sized content and immediately upload it from the handset to his or her website or blog, Flickr, YouTube or other online channels. This effectively creates an artist-branded content feed that can help strengthen the connection between performer and fan base.

Wireless industry’s largest device database enables growing consumer base for mobile data

Volantis, a supplier of Intelligent Content Adaptation™ solutions for the Mobile Internet, has announced expanded device coverage for carrier and content providers delivering mobile content to their subscribers. Volantis’ device database now enables the optimal presentation of unique content – covering a broad range of static, dynamic and interactive content types -- on more than more than 4,000 mobile devices worldwide.

“Wireless carriers recognize that achieving significant growth in data ARPU is only possible if content can be accessed by a broad level of the population,” said Seamus McAteer, senior analyst, M:Metrics, the mobile market authority. “The increasing device diversity we see in markets globally could present a real barrier to driving data adoption. That barrier can be lowered through detailed knowledge of device performance, features and functionality.” » read more »

Report Finds Windows Mobile Outlook Easiest to Configure

Strong User Preference for On-Device Wizard

The Strategy Analytics Wireless Device Lab has recently released its latest end user benchmark report, "Windows Mobile Outlook Easiest to Configure: Beats BlackBerry BIS, Nokia S60 and UIQ v3.0 Email Clients," which concludes that users find Windows Mobile Pocket Outlook to be the easiest mobile email client to configure for a POP3 email account.

Achieving a 100% success rate, Pocket Outlook also outperformed its competitors for speed and user satisfaction. The BlackBerry Internet Service suffered fatal email configuration challenges, while discoverability was an issue for Nokia Series 60.

"Participants showed a strong preference for an on-device wizard approach to email setup" according to Paul Brown, User Experience Analyst at Strategy Analytics. "Step-by-step guidance through the setup process makes it very difficult for participants to actually go wrong." » read more »
