Chosen for their ability to quickly and securely implement new features and capabilities while consuming minimal power and board space, Altera’s MAX IIZ CPLDs manage several peripherals in the P1200 handsets, including a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader, an Infrared Data Association (IRDA) sensor, a Bluetooth interface, and LED control. PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, May 20, 2008 – According to The NPD Group, the leader in market research for the wireless industry, mobile phone handset sales to consumers in the U.S. reached nearly 31 million units in the first quarter of 2008, which is a 22 percent decline since the same period a year ago.
NPD estimates total first quarter 2008 consumer sales of nearly $2.7 billion, down from $2.9 billion a year ago.

“For the first time since NPD has tracked handset sales, we’ve noted a decline in sales during the first quarter after the holidays,” said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for NPD. “Cellular phone service has become a practical necessity in modern life; however, with looming economic concerns on the horizon, many consumers may be holding back on new handset purchases.” » read more »

Bellevue, WA, May 21, 2008 - 3G Americas, a wireless industry trade association representing the GSM family of technologies including LTE, has announced total market share for the GSM family equal to 66% of the entire cellular market in the Western Hemisphere.
This represents a 9% percent increase in market share since the first quarter of 2007, according to Informa Telecoms and Media’s World Cellular Information Service. With nearly 450 million subscriptions at the end of the first quarter of 2008, Informa forecasts that GSM and UMTS/HSPA are on track to break 500 million subscriptions in the Western Hemisphere by the end of this year with a 70% share of market. » read more »
