LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - With the 2006 hurricane season officially beginning today, Alltel has taken extensive steps to prepare for any weather-related emergency that might threaten communications services in coastal states. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a "very active" hurricane season in the North Atlantic, with four to six major hurricanes. Typically, NOAA said, the North Atlantic sees two major hurricanes each season.
"Alltel works year-round to plan for hurricane season to make sure our customers stay connected to friends and family during storms," said Chris Smith, executive vice president of network services for Alltel. "Alltel has made significant investments in its wireless network to improve coverage and reliability, and after last year's hurricanes, we were one of the first carriers to restore service to the Gulf Coast states."
Alltel has for years maintained a formal plan for preparing for hurricanes and then responds with manpower, generators and equipment once a storm hits. The company routinely opens a remote Hurricane Command Center to manage resources and lead network recovery efforts during disasters.
This year, Alltel already has:
* Secured agreements with vendors to provide fuel to keep trucks and generators running.
* Placed generators on standby in hurricane-prone areas, and tested on-site backup generators for readiness in case of a power outage. In addition, the company has purchased more than 100 new generators.
* Prepared to provide lodging, RVs, food and water for technicians working in storm-hit areas.
Alltel also works to help customers in hard-hit areas. Retail stores remain open as long as possible and reopen as soon as conditions permit to allow customers access to phone chargers and batteries. Alltel opens mobile retail stores in particularly hard-hit areas.
Last year, Alltel retail stores across the country provided customers displaced by the hurricanes with phones to make free calls to friends and family. The company also provided free nationwide roaming and long-distance to customers in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast.
Customers can prepare for hurricane season by:
* Verifying that wireless phones are working properly.
* Programming wireless phones with emergency contact numbers.
* Making sure wireless phone batteries remain fully charged.
* Keeping additional charged batteries on hand along with car chargers. Phones, batteries and chargers should be kept in dry, easily accessible areas.
* Have a non-cordless telephone available at home in the event of a power outage.
In addition, in the event a hurricane occurs, customers should consider:
* Using Text Messaging instead of trying to place a call.
* Limiting non-emergency calls, whenever possible.
* Waiting 10-15 seconds before dialing again if a call fails to go through.
* Using their camera phones to record damage for insurance purposes.
Alltel is a customer-focused communications company with more than 15 million customers in 37 states and nearly $10 billion in annual revenues.

ATLANTA, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Don't be surprised if you call a Cingular Wireless customer this summer and you're greeted by a popular Warner Music Group (NYSE: WMG) recording artist. The two companies today launched the unique "Say My Name" Answer Tonesâ„¢ promotion that will run for the next four weeks -- exclusively for Cingular customers. The catalog will continue to grow throughout the promotional period and will feature colorful greetings by artists Juvenile, Yung Joc, Trillville, The Wreckers, Ice T, Jamie Kennedy & Stu Stone, Blake Shelton and Cham.Answer Tones let customers replace the standard ringing sound that a caller normally hears while they wait for their call to be answered and exchanges it with an audio clip of a popular song, celebrity voice, joke or quote. As part of the "Say My Name" promotion, several of WMG's award-winning artists have pre-recorded 20 second Answer Tones greetings for many of today's most popular names. Cingular customers simply find their name among the "Say My Name" Answer Tones and then select the WMG artist who they would like to greet their callers.
For example, UTP/Atlantic recording artist Juvenile recorded the following "Say My Name" Answer Tone exclusively for Cingular customers: "Wassup, this ya boy Juve The Great, Juvenile that is, and look, you ain't gonna believe this; Jennifer can't find her cell phone! Again! That's right. It might be buried in her purse, maybe she left it at home, but I can assure you, right now she's trying hard to find it and answer this call. While she's looking, that means you gotta listen to my voice for a while."
Michael Nash, Senior Vice President, Digital Strategy and Business Development, Warner Music Group said, "Warner Music Group is pleased to again partner with Cingular Wireless to offer music fans another first-of-its-kind mobile-based music product from some of the industry's most recognizable creative voices. 'Say My Name' Answer Tones also expand our worldwide commitment to mobile music product innovation and to making our content available for consumers to enjoy anytime, anywhere, through multiple distribution channels, platforms and services."
"Answer Tones are a fun way for consumers to personalize their wireless experience and give their friends a little something extra when they call," said Lisa Nied, Answer Tones senior product marketing manager, Cingular Wireless. "We're pleased to team with Warner Music Group on this special promotion to extend our Answer Tones catalog to include greetings by some of their popular recording artists."
Cingular Answer Tones gives customers the flexibility and control to determine what callers hear when they dial their number:
- Select the type of tones callers hear -- from an audio clip of a
particular song, or one of the celebrity "Say My Name" greetings
- Designate the time of day you want callers to hear Answer Tones
- Assign tones to a specific phone number, group, or to everyone that
callsThe charge for each Answer Tone purchase is $1.99, in addition to a monthly service charge of $0.99. For more information on Answer Tones and the "Say My Name" promotion, visit http://www.cingularanswertones.com/ .
