TORONTO, May 25 /CNW/ - The W810 starts ringing, rocking and clicking on Rogers Wireless today as Sony Ericsson adds this Walkman(R)-branded mobile music phone featuring an expandable memory and an award winning 2.0 Mega Pixel AutoFocus camera to its line-up.

"With more than three million phones in circulation worldwide the Walkman phone has been an unprecedented success" says Magnus Ahlqvist, General Manager for Sony Ericsson in Canada. "We are excited to have Rogers as the first wireless company in North America to carry the stylish W810 providing consumers with a feature rich digital music and imaging experience." The latest Walkman phone comes with a 512MB removable Memory Stick PRO Duo(TM), which can be upgraded to a 2GB Memory Stick already available in retail stores (4 GB cards available in Q4) allowing consumers to store a wealth of music tracks, photos, video and other multimedia files on their phones.
"As the exclusive carrier for the W810, the first 2.0 Mega Pixel AutoFocus camera in-stores, Rogers Wireless continues to bring Canadians the best in mobile style and design with exclusive innovative feature-packed phones," says John Boynton, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Rogers Wireless. "The W810 lets you listen to hours of music, capture and send high-resolution images, access the Internet, as well as take advantage of fast data download speeds for games, streaming video and stay connected through instant messaging or email."
The Disc2Phone(R) software enables consumers to transfer music files with ease via a fast 2.0 USB connection from your PC and then play, sort, browse and customize play lists all via dedicated music buttons. The W810 like all Sony Ericsson Walkman phones supports standard MP3 and AAC music file formats and can store up to 150 music tracks on the 512 MB removable card - the equivalent of around 15 full length CDs.
"Sony Ericsson's Walkman phones are redefining how consumers listen and enjoy music," says Ahlqvist. Since the launch of the Walkman phone consumers across the world have been embracing the concept of the mobile phone as a credible digital music player," says Ahlqvist.
The award winning W810 Walkman phone sells for $299.99 with a three-year service agreement from Rogers Wireless and is available for purchase at Rogers Wireless dealers and retail points of sale across Canada or online at www.rogers.com.
The W810 is equipped with EDGE technology, to allow quick and easy data transfers and Internet access as well as Bluetooth(TM) Wireless technology for connectivity with Bluetooth handsfree headsets and sharing data with other Bluetooth-enabled devices. A range of Walkman phone accessories including speakers and desk stands are also available.
Enjoying music on the Sony Ericsson W810 Walkman phone is extremely simple because a dedicated Walkman button quickly pulls up the music menu regardless of other applications in use and the engaging Mega Bass(TM) improves the sound experience when listening to music through the external speaker or the high quality headphones.
As with all Walkman phones, your music automatically pauses when an incoming call is received and begins playing again when the call ends. The phone also offers a music-only mode for those occasions when the phone function must be disengaged, such as during air travel.
"It is an exciting time to be at Sony Ericsson Canada and if the sales of the W600 Walkman phones in Canada are any indication, we are expecting big things for the W810," adds Ahlqvist."

VICTORIA, May 26 /CNW/ - When the 63rd Swiftsure International Yacht Race -- Lightship Classic gets under sail on May 26th, in the waters off Victoria, British Columbia, competitors, officials and fans will have a bird's-eye view of the race, thanks to sophisticated satellite positioning transponders provided by FleetPoint and Rogers Wireless. For the first time, supporters, race enthusiasts, family members and friends on shore also can watch the progress of the boats over the course of the three-day sailing event. The battery powered transponders on each boat will continuously determine their position using GPS satellites, and transmit that position, along with the direction and speed of the boat, over the Rogers Wireless network. Boats at sea and everyone on shore can watch the progress of each of the Swiftsure contestants via the Internet at www.swiftsure.org/broadcast.
The technology is not limited to just spectator appeal. Steve Rander, owner and skipper of the 70' Wylie-designed sailboat, Rage, carried a transponder on last year's Lightship Classic. Steve commented after the race, "The transponders fundamentally add to the competitiveness of the race because we have a much better idea of where our competitors are and how they are responding to changes in weather conditions on the course".
Originally considered just a safety aid, many sailors have now discovered that transponders are much more than that. In addition to enhancing safety, these devices allow much greater participation in the live action of sailing and actually improve performance, especially over moderate distances like the Swiftsure. The Lightship Classic, one of seven different races that make up the event known collectively as Swiftsure, is a 140 nautical mile race.
During this year's Lightship Classic the boats will be receiving the data the same way that the rest of us do - on the Internet. At the start, the GPS position information can be used by the race committee to more accurately determine if boats are over the start line early (premature starters) and more accurately identify boats as they finish in the early hours of the morning, when sail numbers can be very hard to read. On the race course the transponders will transmit position reports every three minutes. When the boats approach within one mile of the finish, their transponders will begin reporting every 30 seconds.
The Swiftsure Race is the perfect event to showcase the extensive wireless communications coverage provided by Rogers Wireless - Canada's largest integrated voice and data network, noted Rogers Wireless Vice President & General Manager, Michael van der Lee. More information about Rogers Wireless fleet solutions can be found at www.rogers.com/enterprise.
"This new portable tracking system uses state-of-the-art wireless technology to make the sailing race more exciting and safer for all the competitors. We are proud to have been selected by the Victoria Yacht Club and the Swiftsure organizers to bring this innovative monitoring service, and the reach of Rogers, to one of sailing world's premier events," van der Lee added.
In addition to helping racing sailors, Rogers Wireless' GPS tracking solutions are available to businesses large and small, helping them communicate, track and better utilize fleets, vehicles, field personnel and remote assets. The technology behind the solutions for the Swiftsure Race has been provided by another Victoria company, FleetPoint, a leading location services and technology developer.
"Thanks to the FleetPoint transponder and Rogers Wireless network, all racers will have the opportunity to download their own race results and the course weather conditions to review their performance," said Chris Carver, Vice President of Business Development for FleetPoint. "We look forward to not only providing them valuable data on the course but also giving them the ability to really analyze their performance during the course of this often grueling race."
On shore, race enthusiasts, family members and friends can watch the race live on the Internet at Ships Point (www.swiftsure.org/broadcast) or at Canada's Oldest Brewpub - Spinnaker's, 308 Catherine Street in Victoria (www.spinnakers.ca).
"This race has been a hallmark of sailing in Victoria since 1930," said Paul Hadfield, owner of Spinnakers Brewpub for the last 22 years. "We are looking forward to being the first to bring the race to fans on land through the magic of satellite tracking from FleetPoint. This new capability is sure to change the face of sailing for people both on shore and on the boats".
Spinnakers recently hosted the arriving boats from the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. The leg across the Pacific was won by the local favorite "Victoria". The Clipper Round the World racers are also using transponders which transmit position updates daily at http://www.clipper-ventures.co.uk/2006/
The Swiftsure International Yacht Race is the race highlight of the year for many skippers and their crew. Swiftsure 2006 promises to deliver another exciting weekend event to Victoria.

MONTREAL, May 24 /CNW/ - Fido today announced the exclusive Canadian launch of the LG 9200 wireless handset, which is a perfect match for the popular instant messaging services from Yahoo! and MSN.

Customers can now have a similar IM chat experience on their mobile device as they do on their home PC. "Instant messaging isn't just for kids anymore. With more than 13 million Canadians using instant messaging, and over half of all Canadians owning a wireless phone, the combination of Fido and IM is a natural fit," said Karim Salabi, Vice-President of Marketing for Fido. "We're seeing more young entrepreneurs with small businesses using IM as a useful tool to connect with clients and colleagues."
The LG 9200 handset's number keypad slides away to reveal a backlit QWERTY keyboard, which is a must for wireless customers who make heavy use of text, picture, instant and e-mail messaging. The embedded IM function ensures that new LG 9200 owners who already have a Yahoo! ID or MSN Messenger account and subscribe to the service can start a mobile IM session within seconds of switching on the device. The handset is also equipped with a camera and zoom lens so that users can send a photo to accompany their messages.
"Our customer base is heavily into messaging, both texting and chatting," said Mr. Salabi. "This is a group that is connected, downtown and rarely at home, so their love of IM fits perfectly with the mobility offered through Fido and Canada's most popular messaging platforms. And the LG 9200 makes the experience a lot easier on the thumbs."
Fido customers who are on the move and would like to use instant messaging, but don't know where to start, can access an on-line demonstration at www.fido.ca/chat that takes the mystery out of messaging for first-time mobile IM users. Customers who already have one of Fido's compatible handsets and IM account can download the appropriate software from the fido.ca Web site.
Fido customers can subscribe to the mobile instant message option, which offers 2,500 sent messages for $5 per month, in addition to a $3 monthly fee per service for each portal. Received messages are free. Each additional message sent costs 10 cents. For a limited time, customers who opt for a 24-month Fido Agreement can take advantage of a special offer of three months of free messaging that includes text, picture and instant messaging.
The LG 9200 is available at all Fido stores and retail partners for $125 with a 24-month Fido Agreement. More information regarding instant messaging is available at fido.ca or by calling 1 888 431-FIDO.

ATLANTA, May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular Wireless announced today it has shattered its own record for wireless text messaging during the fifth season of "American Idol." Cingular recorded more than 64.5 million text messages throughout the show's season, breaking last year's record of 41.5 million text messages. Text messages include votes, trivia, sweepstakes entries, TXT chats, fan club and vote number reminder.Another Great Season of Idol-themed Content
Cingular introduced a lot of great "American Idol"-themed content this season, but its newest offering, Live Idol Tones, stole the show. Cingular broke new ground in the music industry with the tones letting Cingular customers purchase and download ringtones and answer tones of select "American Idol" performances* just 24 hours after they were performed live on the show. Typically, traditional recorded music requires months to go from recording to distribution. Last week, Cingular's Live Idol Tones category of ringtones was one of the top sellers, and the company expects the same stellar performance again this week.
"We are pleased to have played a role in what was another great season of 'American Idol'," said John Burbank, vice president of marketing, Cingular Wireless. "We knocked Idol-related text messaging out of the ballpark and added another home run with our Live Idol Tones which capitalized on the passion 'American Idol' fans have for their favorite contestants."
Cingular customers also had exclusive wireless access to "American Idol" throughout the season with services including TXT chats with Idol contestants, and convenient vote number reminders listing all of the "American Idol" contestants who performed that week. In addition, Cingular customers also connected to the show through the Idol Wireless Fan Club which let them keep up with the latest Idol news, play Idol Trivia on their wireless devices or download "American Idol"-related ringtones such as the show's theme song, or songs from former Idol winners and contestants. And on May 23, Cingular awarded Joanne Petrella from Tampa, Florida a $100,000 prize when she won the Cingular "American Idol" $100,000 Trivia Challenge in Los Angeles before the show's finale. Hosted by former Idol contestant Tamyra Gray, Petrella competed against 16 other contestants and answered the most correct questions about "American Idol" history, former Idol contestants and memorable moments from the show. Trivia contestants were selected through text entries and Cingular radio promotions held in different cities throughout the country.

CHICAGO and MILWAUKEE, May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular Wireless today said it will spend $400 million this year to extend coverage and enhance the quality of service for customers in Illinois and Wisconsin and more than $6 billion nationally. The company expects to add more than 140 cell sites in Illinois and Wisconsin alone and finish integrating its GSM network, which began when it purchased AT&T Wireless in 2004.In 2005, Cingular Wireless, the country's largest wireless provider, turned on-air more than 110 new cell sites in Illinois and Wisconsin. Also, in 2005, the company invested $300 million to expand network coverage and improve capacity to benefit customers in the area. With the 2006 investment, the company will have spent more than $700 million in Illinois and Wisconsin during the past two years.
Additionally, customers in Chicago and Northwest, Indiana also have access to Cingular's 3G high-speed broadband wireless network. For customers who don't want to find a Wi-Fi hot spot at a coffee shop or burger joint, Cingular offers BroadbandConnect service, which uses a laptop PC modem card providing average data connections between 400-700 kilobits per second on the downlink with bursts to more than a megabit per second. Other options include 3G phones with MEdiaNet services, featuring Cingular Video, giving customers access to a variety of streaming video services, together with exclusive content from HBO.
Cingular's 3G service also offers customers the opportunity to use a phone for voice and data services simultaneously, so they can talk to someone while using the phone as a modem for accessing data services -- something other carriers' 3G technology doesn't allow. Customers can select from a number of data plans priced between $19.99 and $59.99.
"It's great to see the investments we're making in our network payoff for customers. Quality and coverage are everything in our business and our customers can be assured they're receiving the most reliable service in Illinois and Wisconsin," said Terry Stenzel, vice president and general manager for Illinois and Wisconsin. "We've improved capacity and in-building wireless coverage by adding hundreds of new cell sites. This investment will enable us to continue delivering the highest quality service available -- service that is enhanced by best-in-industry calling plan value and cutting- edge devices."

Additionally, the company offers an interactive mapping tool available at all retail locations and by calling 1-866-CINGULAR. The tool provides customers with up-to-date wireless coverage information and is designed to answer a customer's specific wireless coverage questions based on an address, street intersection, zip code or even a landmark. It enables the customer to view his or her Cingular coverage all the way down to the neighborhood street level while depicting the likelihood of coverage in various scenarios - such as inside a building.
