Motorola Joins (RED) to Help Eliminate AIDS in Africa

Motorola Joins (RED) to Help Eliminate AIDS in Africa

Motorola mobile phone users to contribute with each call, text and download as the UK telecommunications industry unites

Consumers can now do the RED thing with BT Mobile, Carphone Warehouse, Fresh, O2, Orange, Tesco Mobile, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone

BASINGSTOKE, UK – 15 May 2006 – Motorola (NYSE:MOT) today unveils, with the unanimous support of the UK Mobile Industry, (MOTO)RED – the first in a brand new portfolio of mobile handsets created to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.Launched by co-founders Bono and Bobby Shriver at the World Economic Forum last January, (PRODUCT) RED is designed to deliver a sustainable flow of private sector money to the Global Fund to fight AIDS.

In an unprecedented demonstration of support, mobile operators and retailers from across the UK (BT Mobile, Carphone Warehouse, Fresh, O2, Orange, Tesco Mobile, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone) have all united behind this initiative.

The first product in Motorola’s new (MOTO)RED portfolio was revealed as the ultra slim, ultra chic red MOTOSLVR.

"RED is a 21st century idea. It's an amazing thing that these companies are doing - lending their creativity and financial firepower to the Global Fund's fight against AIDS in Africa, the greatest health crisis in 600 years. I think doing the RED thing, doing good, will turn out to be good business for them," said Bono, co-creator of RED.

“Motorola has been doing business in Africa for more than 30 years, and our support of the Global Fund is one way that we're able to give back to the region. Additionally, with our new red model, MOTOSLVR will help change the way people think about AIDS in Africa. We're literally placing in people's hands an opportunity to help find a solution," said Ron Garriques, president of Motorola Mobile Devices. "Motorola and the retailer partners in the UK are contributing £10 from every red MOTOSLVR handset purchase. And, starting today, our operator partners have agreed to donate to the Global Fund 5% of the monthly revenue generated by each red MOTOSLVR. So, with every call, every text and every download, consumers will be able to make a difference in the fight against AIDS in Africa every day."

Recent figures1 provided by the Global Fund demonstrate just how significant the individual contribution every new (MOTO) RED connection can make. The proceeds of selling just three handsets can provide a year’s worth of school materials and daily hot meals for a child orphaned by AIDS, while 5% of the average yearly phone bill can provide 180 treatments to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

The new red MOTOSLVR will be available to purchase in stores throughout the UK from 15 May 2006.

About the Global Fund
The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is a unique global public-private partnership dedicated to attracting and disbursing additional resources to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. This partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector and affected communities represents a new approach to international health financing. The Fund works in close collaboration with other bilateral and multilateral organizations to supplement existing efforts dealing with the three diseases.

Apart from a high standard of technical quality, the Global Fund attaches no conditions to any of its grants. It is not an implementing agency, instead relying on local ownership and planning to ensure that new resources are directed to programs on the frontline of this global effort to reach those most in need. Its performance-based approach to grant-making is designed to ensure that funds are used efficiently and create real change for people and communities. All programs are monitored by independent organizations contracted by the Global Fund to ensure that its funding has an impact in the fight against these three pandemics, which together kill over 6 million people per year. AIDS alone kills over 3 million people per year.

As of end December 2005, 384,000 people have begun Antiretroviral (ARV) treatment through Global Fund supported programs, which is nearly triple the number of ARV recipients funded by Global Fund resources by the end of 2004. Around half of the Global Fund’s financing ($5.2 billion committed to 385 programs in 130 countries) is being spent on medicines, mosquito nets to prevent malaria and other products, while the other half is for strengthening health services. Taken together, Global Fund supported programs to combat malaria expanded distribution of insecticide treated bed nets to 7.7 million. In addition, tuberculosis programs have detected and treated more than one million TB cases through DOTS (Directly Observed Short Course Treatment).

Telcordia and Norbelle Collaborate to Provide Real-Time, Highly Precise Accurate, Mobile-to-Mobile Tracking

Telcordia and Norbelle Collaborate to Provide Real-Time, Highly Precise Accurate, Mobile-to-Mobile Tracking

Ability to Dynamically Track Mobile Users in Real-Time Opens Doors to a Multitude of New and Improved Carrier Offerings

PISCATAWAY, NJ - May 15, 2006 -Telcordia Technologies, Inc., (www.telcordia.com) today announced a strategic alliance with NorBelle, LLC (www.norbelle.com), an international wireless location technology provider, to commercialize and deliver mobile-to-mobile tracking solutions that provide real-time location reporting and significantly improved accuracy in tracking to end users. These applications will be part of the Telcordia® Maestro™ IMS portfolio delivering product- and hosted-based solutions to wireless carriers globally. This new and innovative product offering is based on the Telcordia® Maestro™ IMS portfolio and NorBelle's flagship product, Cearch™, which increases the accuracy and extends the application of location based solutions. Based on sophisticated algorithms developed and patented by NorBelle, it is maximized for handset-to-handset and handset-to-tag transactions. This state-of-the-art GPS and location accuracy enhancement system dynamically allows one wireless device in motion to track and locate any other wireless device in motion with precision.

Telcordia is bringing this advanced technology to market to enhance its leadership role in delivering applications that allow carriers to deliver leading-edge solutions that set them apart from the competition. This brings significant benefits, for example, better parental guidance as to the exact whereabouts of their children, or greater productivity/responsiveness in managing small business field forces or delivering more accurate asset tracking for enterprise customers. In addition, it also gives carriers a more innovative way to deliver mobile marketing messages, creating additional revenue streams. In each case, the unique ability to track from a mobile device to another mobile device with real-time updates frees end users from being tied to a fixed location or device to track another person or physical asset.

Now, with the Telcordia® Maestro™ IMS portfolio and Cearch-enabled devices, the solution will consistently bring the user within "line of sight" of the person or object they are seeking on the most prevalent receivers in the most challenging of GPS reception environments . Where devices employ coherent tracking GPS receivers, Cearch technology can improve relative positioning performance to within 1-meter. The highly accurate relative measurements are accompanied by NorBelle's unique and patented mobile application, which intuitively guides a user with a compass-like arrow that points to a target in any terrain without necessitating the use of miniature maps or short form text messages. While this capability is quite helpful in busy and densely populated locals, it is indispensable in unmapped areas.

"We believe that location tracking provides carriers worldwide with significant service offering opportunities, while meeting the demands of their subscribers," said Mike Henderson, president, Global Solutions, Telcordia. "When looking for a partner to enable location tracking services, Telcordia found Norbelle to be the perfect company due to its advanced technology advancements and flexible business model. We look forward to working together to bring location based services to market on a mass scale."

Improved accuracy is the lynchpin in the value proposition for certain high demand commercial, consumer and emergency location services. Whether it is an enterprise tracking precious cargo, a small business efficiently managing a limited field force or more importantly, a parent searching for a lost child or a Police Department trying to locate a wireless user in an emergency…how close a searcher can be brought to the true position of their target, matters. In a city like New York, reliably being able to locate a car within a half block or less is highly efficient whereas narrowing its location to a six or eight square block vicinity, is effectively useless.

"Mobile-to-mobile real-time tracking is just one example of a more valuable location service. With the Cearch platform providing carriers with the capability to improve the accuracy of a wide variety of other location offerings, the true potential for revenues from this space is much more likely to be realized," said Patrick Mulhearn, CEO, NorBelle. "NorBelle and Telcordia together will be providing next-generation solutions through technology leadership to meet a variety of end-user Location Based Services needs."

The LBS conundrum has been: how can the consumer research consistently identify such enormous demand for tracking products, while no carrier offering has approached that level of success in the market? Telcordia and NorBelle expect to help carriers bridge that gap with Cearch technology. "If you can't be brought close enough to see what you are looking for, you can't find it. If you can't find it, why would you pay for something that purports to be a "tracking service?" asks Patrick Mulhearn, "It is just as true that if you can depend on a service to consistently, accurately, reliably allow you to monitor and/or rendezvous with your child, that capability becomes, as they say, "priceless" in times of need. Truly effective location products will sell themselves".

Telcordia is embarking on multiple tier-one trials with carriers across the globe, having completed lab trials with a major carrier in North America supporting both GSM and CDMA technologies. NorBelle has already secured relationships with wireless tag manufacturers to support this new technology.

About NorBelle
Founded in 1999, NorBelle is a location systems engineering firm offering a wide array of server, application and device-based solutions. Underpinning all of NorBelle's offerings is its patented Cearchâ„¢ technology that enables significantly enhanced accuracy on multiple location methodologies (GPS, and land-based trilateration including AFLT, TDOA, etc.). Together with its strategic global partners, NorBelle will introduce "turnkey" network, commercial and consumer product solutions through wireless operators in Europe and the United States providing for the easy and secure tracking of people and things in a highly accurate way.

NorBelle has a network of licensed strategic partners that includes: chip makers; OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers); LSPs (Location Service Providers); and wireless carriers/operators. Sonera to provide Iin Energia and Yli-Iin Sähkö with automatic electricity consumption measurement as a total service

Sonera to provide Iin Energia and Yli-Iin Sähkö with automatic electricity consumption measurement as a total service

5/15/2006 -- Iin Energia Oy and Yli-Iin Sähkö Oy have concluded an agreement with TeliaSonera Finland Oyj on the provision of automatic electricity consumption measurement as a total service. Using the new service, the electricity company can remote read all electricity meters of its area wirelessly once a day, which allows the company to invoice its customers based on the actual consumption. The new service entity will considerably facilitate the lives of both users and the electricity companies. The agreements will remain in force for 15 years. The total service agreement covers, for example, the delivery, installation and maintenance of new intelligent electricity meters, a mobile-based automatic meter reading service, and the necessary telecommunications connections. In addition to consumption data, the solution also provides information on the state of the network. Sites with district heating will also be incorporated in the scope of the service according to the same schedule.

The consumption and fault data of electricity meters will be transmitted wirelessly to Sonera's database once a day and forwarded from there to the network companies. The data connection is a two-way connection: in addition to the information transmitted from the meters to the system, software updates and tariff changes, for example, are sent from the system to the meters in real time.

Consumption data is measured genuinely in real time, as electricity meters appear as independent devices in the network, and the personnel of the electricity company can access them immediately through a browser-based user interface. The introduction of automatic measurement requires that all electricity meters in the areas be replaced by new remote-readable meters. The replacement process begins at the beginning of August.

The total service will provide Iin Energia Oy and Yli-Iin Sähkö Oy with significant benefits. It will allow the network companies to monitor consumption data accurately and in real time, to switch over to actual consumption-based invoicing, and to enhance both customer service and fault management.

"We selected Sonera's service solution, as it suited our needs best. The agreement will facilitate the operations of our companies in many ways. Since we buy the solution as a service, it does not tie up our own capital. Our companies will receive each service entity on turnkey basis, and we will pay fixed monthly service charges for them, which will also makes it easier to plan and budget our operations," say Juhani Jääskeläinen, CEO of Iin Energia Oy, and Tuomo Alaoja, CEO of Yli-Iin Sähkö Oy.

"The new service solution will also free our resources for new things. Installers can use the time they have used for collecting meter readings for actual installation work. And TeliaSonera's leadership in telecommunications provides a solid foundation for our cooperation," say Juhani Jääskeläinen and Tuomo Alaoja.

"The energy sector is one of the strategic focus areas of TeliaSonera Finland. Electricity business is to an increasing extent data communications. Companies can streamline their processes by utilizing real-time data. Networking and automation are musts for future business. End-to-end manageability and transparency are the key words. We want to support companies' customer focus and build total service solutions that support their business," says Esa Korvenmaa, Chief Operating Officer of TeliaSonera Finland.

The introduction of automatic measurement requires that all electricity meters in the areas be replaced by new remote-readable meters. The replacement process begins at the beginning of August.
