Musiwave Continues to Gain Momentum with Operators Worldwide with More than 22 Live Services and 55 Handset Models

LAS VEGAS, CTIA - April 5, 2006 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the independent provider of open software products and services for the communications and media industry, today announced its Rich Mail offering, a new PC-based Web mail solution designed for carrier-scale deployment by broadband and mobile operators around the world. Rich mail enhances the email experience for consumers by offering a dynamic, feature-rich user experience and enables broadband and mobile operators to brand and personalize their Web mail offerings. KDDI, one of Japan's leading telecommunication companies, will deploy Openwave Rich Mail for its customers."As the communications industry continues to offer converged services, the value of email is expanding beyond the traditional communication realm, and can be used to promote value-added, personalized services to consumers," said Richard Wong, senior vice president, product and solutions group, Openwave. "Rich Mail is a key component in Openwave's vision to deliver adaptive messaging services that are individualized, instinctive and intelligent across all channels. By combining Rich Mail on the PC with the Openwave MIDAS user experience engine on the handset, Openwave offers operators the ability to launch adaptive messaging services that can be personalized across both the mobile and PC environments."

Openwave Rich Mail offers operators the branding and personalization benefits of a Web-based interface coupled with enhanced functionality that recreates a PC-based email program experience. Enhanced features include the ability to preview email content, "drag and drop" files and enable the usage of contextual right-click menus.

KDDI has selected Openwave's Rich Mail offering and is using the application to offer a dynamic Web-based e-mail environment for DION1 users. The service also features added security for DION's large-scale system and includes the ability to scale as requirements increase.

"We selected Openwave's Rich Mail offering to bring new innovation to our internet services, and make our Web mail services more attractive to our customers," said Masami Ishikura, General Manager, FMC Platform Division of KDDI. "We believe our relationship with Openwave will allow us to provide our customers innovative services now and for the future."

Rich mail also includes the ability for service providers to incorporate added functionality, including e-commerce, voice calling, and added information services such as location, traffic and news through contextual hyperlinks within email text. The Rich Mail service is opt-in/opt-out, based on a user's preference and only offers links to pre-determined services that an operator has selected.

Openwave leads the industry with its IP-based messaging framework; its suite of IP-based messaging products and solutions are designed to address communication service providers' needs for a new class of adaptive messaging services that help them address convergence across landline, mobile and broadband networks.

Openwave's suite of messaging products and services is designed to increase subscriber value and revenue potential for service providers, decrease time-to-market for integrated services, and allow consumers to easily communicate across devices and networks. In addition to Rich Mail, Openwave's roster of messaging products includes: Email Mx, Voicemail, Video Voicemail, Multimedia Messaging Service Center (MMSC), Edge Gx Anti Abuse, Outreach Express, and SMS, EMS and MMS clients.
